Round 20 of the Premier World League Season 2026 delivered a huge batch of goals and several important results in the playoff race. With 62 rounds in the season, there is still a long way to go, but the standings are beginning to separate into clear tiers.

🔥 Round 20 Highlights
Gamba Osaka made one of the biggest statements of the round, crushing Olimpia 5–1 away from home. Gamba entered the match in 2nd place and came in with five straight wins, so this result further strengthens their credentials as a World Cup of Clubs contender. Olimpia, meanwhile, remain down in 24th, firmly in King's Cup territory.
River Plate also produced a major result, defeating Santos Laguna 4–2. River entered in 4th, meaning they occupy the final World Cup of Clubs position. Santos were sitting 16th, right on the edge of the playoff zone, making this a particularly damaging defeat for the Mexican side.
Boca Juniors kept their outstanding run going with a 3–2 victory over Puebla. Boca came into Round 20 in 3rd place and had won four of their previous five matches. Puebla, ranked 19th, remain outside the playoff places and in Friendly Cup territory.
🌎 The Top-Four Race
The most important battle remains at the top.
- Busan Ipark FC — 1st: Drew 2–2 with Flamengo. Busan remain the benchmark at the summit, although dropping two points gives the chasing pack an opportunity.
- Gamba Osaka — 2nd: Dominant 5–1 win over Olimpia. Their five-match winning streak makes them one of the hottest teams in the league.
- Boca Juniors — 3rd: Beat Puebla 3–2 and continued their excellent form.
- River Plate — 4th: Won 4–2 against Santos Laguna and protected their World Cup of Clubs position.
The top four are therefore all currently holding the coveted World Cup of Clubs places, but the gap below them remains important with 42 rounds still to play.
⚽ Playoff Race: Places 5–16
The battle for the remaining playoff positions produced several interesting results.
New England Revolution, ranked 6th, were one of the round's biggest winners, defeating Millonarios 4–1. New England arrived with five consecutive victories, making their current form particularly impressive.
Melgar, sitting 7th, also continued their perfect recent run by beating Maritimo 3–1. They entered the match with five straight wins, putting serious pressure on the teams above them.
Inter Miami, ranked 5th, were held to a 1–1 draw by Querétaro. It was a missed opportunity for Miami to strengthen their position immediately behind the top four.
Houston Dynamo, ranked 14th, picked up an important 3–2 victory over Atlético Nacional, giving themselves valuable breathing room inside the playoff zone.
Columbus Crew, ranked 10th, defeated Caroni 2–1. That is an important three points for a team looking to remain comfortably inside the top 16.
📈 Teams Trying to Break Into the Playoffs
The middle of the table remains extremely competitive.
ACF Fiorentina, ranked 18th, could only draw 2–2 with Chivas. Fiorentina therefore remain outside the playoff places and currently sit in the Friendly Cup zone.
Santos Laguna's loss leaves them 16th, meaning they are currently holding the final playoff position. Their defeat to River puts pressure on them from the teams immediately below.
Puebla, at 19th, also missed an opportunity after losing 3–2 to Boca.
🟢 Friendly Cup Battle
Positions 17–22 are currently the Friendly Cup places.
Several teams in this region had mixed fortunes:
- International — 17th: Lost 3–2 to South China.
- ACF Fiorentina — 18th: Drew 2–2 with Chivas.
- Puebla — 19th: Lost 3–2 to Boca.
- Union Huaral — 20th: Lost 3–2 to Chicago Fire.
- Caroni — 21st: Lost 2–1 to Columbus Crew.
- Chicago Fire — 22nd: Huge 3–2 away victory over Union Huaral.
Chicago's victory is particularly valuable because they are sitting directly on the 22nd-place cutoff for the Friendly Cup.
🟡 King's Cup Pressure
Positions 23–26 are currently the King's Cup zone.
Cerro Porteño, ranked 25th, earned a valuable 3–2 victory over Sociedad, who are down in 28th. Cerro's five-match form before this game was poor, so the victory could provide a badly needed boost.
Kawasaki Frontale, ranked 23rd, defeated Yokohama F. Marinos 2–1. That win is especially significant because it keeps Kawasaki in the King's Cup positions while moving them closer to the Friendly Cup teams above.
Zamalek, ranked 26th, defeated Emelec 3–2. That is another crucial three points in the fight to avoid falling toward the bottom.
🔴 Relegation Danger
The bottom of the table is becoming increasingly dangerous.
Sociedad, ranked 28th, lost 3–2 to Cerro Porteño, while Yokohama F. Marinos, ranked 30th, fell 2–1 to Kawasaki Frontale.
The two relegation positions are 31st and 32nd, so these clubs still have teams below them to worry about, but the pressure will increase considerably if they cannot start collecting points.
⭐ Round 20 Winners
Gamba Osaka were arguably the biggest winners of the round with their spectacular 5–1 victory and continued five-match winning streak. New England Revolution, Melgar, River Plate, Boca Juniors, Houston Dynamo, Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire, Kawasaki Frontale and Zamalek also collected important victories.
📊 Round 20 Storyline
With 20 of 62 rounds completed, the Premier World League is roughly one-third of the way through the season. The World Cup of Clubs race currently features Busan Ipark, Gamba Osaka, Boca Juniors and River Plate, while Inter Miami, New England Revolution and Melgar are leading the chase just outside the top four.
At the other end, the battle between the Friendly Cup, King's Cup and relegation zones is becoming increasingly intense. The next few rounds could produce major movement, particularly around the 16th/17th-place playoff cutoff and the 22nd/23rd-place Friendly Cup cutoff.
