Round 10 of League III Season 2026 delivered another action-packed set of matches in Group A, with several teams making important moves in the promotion race. With a 50-round season, there is still a long way to go, but the battle for the top spots is already becoming extremely interesting.
The promotion structure is clear: 1st place earns automatic promotion to League II, while 2nd through 9th enter the promotion playoffs for the second promotion spot. 10th qualifies for the Friendly Cup, 11th and 12th qualify for the King's Cup, and there is no relegation for the teams at the bottom of the table.
Viking FK Keeps Rolling
One of the biggest results of Round 10 came from Viking FK, who defeated Club Deportivo Palestino 3–2 at Viking Stadion.
Viking entered the match ranked 2nd and in spectacular form, having won their previous five matches. They continued that incredible run with another victory, keeping the pressure firmly on league leaders Toronto FC.
Palestino, ranked 14th, fought back but could not complete the comeback. For Viking, this was another statement that they are serious contenders for automatic promotion.
Toronto FC Stumbles at the Top
League leaders Toronto FC suffered a surprising 2–1 defeat away to PFC CSKA Moscow.
Toronto came into the round sitting 1st, making this a major opportunity for the teams chasing them. CSKA, ranked 13th, took advantage of their home-field advantage at VEB Arena and secured an impressive three points.
The defeat does not erase Toronto's excellent position, but it gives the chasing pack renewed hope in the promotion race.
Pirata FC Wins the Battle at Raja
Pirata FC picked up a valuable 2–1 away victory against Raja.
Raja entered the match ranked 8th, right in the promotion-playoff positions, while Pirata occupied 3rd. The result strengthens Pirata's position near the top while dealing a blow to Raja's hopes of remaining comfortably inside the playoff places.
With the difference between the automatic promotion places and the playoff positions being so important, this was a particularly valuable three points for Pirata.
Dakar Continues Its Strong Run
AS Dakar Sacré-Coeur produced another excellent performance, defeating SC Heerenveen 2–1.
Dakar entered the round ranked 4th and had been showing excellent recent form, with four wins and a draw across its previous five matches. That momentum continued here.
For Heerenveen, currently ranked 16th, the defeat leaves them outside the playoff picture and with plenty of work to do over the remaining 40 rounds.
Audax Italianio Edges Coquimbo
In an all-Chilean matchup, Audax Italiano came away with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Coquimbo Unido.
Coquimbo was ranked 6th going into the match, while Audax sat 7th, making this an important clash between two teams battling around the playoff zone.
Audax's strong recent form — including three wins and a draw in its previous five matches — helped them secure the victory. Coquimbo, meanwhile, will be disappointed after coming so close to taking something from the match.
Cobresal Gets the Better of Deportes Iquique
Cobresal defeated Deportes Iquique 2–1 at El Cobre.
Iquique entered the match ranked 5th, while Cobresal was 12th, so this was another significant result for the upper half of the table.
Cobresal's victory is particularly important because 12th place is currently the final King's Cup position. A few more results like this could push Cobresal toward the playoff places, while Iquique will want to bounce back quickly to avoid losing ground on the top four.
FC Köln Wins at Home
FC Köln defeated Chaco Petrolero 2–1 at RheinEnergieStadion.
Köln, ranked 17th, earned an important three points against 9th-place Chaco. While Köln remains outside the playoff positions, victories like this could dramatically change their season with 40 rounds still remaining.
Chaco entered the match with excellent recent form, making the defeat particularly frustrating.
RB Leipzig Cruises Past Guangzhou
One of the most convincing victories of the round came from RB Leipzig, who defeated Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao 4–1 at Red Bull Arena.
Leipzig entered the match ranked 20th but produced one of the round's biggest attacking performances. Guangzhou, ranked 10th, had been competing for a place in the Friendly Cup zone, making the result especially valuable for Leipzig.
For Guangzhou, the defeat means they will need to regroup quickly if they want to hold onto their position around the Friendly Cup cutoff.
Other Round 10 Results
The remaining matches also produced important results:
- Dynamo Moscow 2–2 Atlético Ottawa — A point apiece in a match between teams ranked 26th and 21st.
- FC Akron Tolyatti 4–1 AZ Alkmaar — A huge victory for 11th-place Tolyatti over 18th-place AZ.
- Defence Force 3–1 Casa Sports — Defence Force strengthened its position with a convincing win.
- FC Union Berlin 2–1 Shandong Luneng Taishan — Union Berlin picked up three points against 19th-place Shandong.
- ASCE La Linguère 2–3 Excelsior Rotterdam — Excelsior completed an exciting away victory despite entering the match ranked 25th.
Promotion Race Heating Up
After ten rounds, the most important story is the battle at the top.
Toronto FC remains the team everyone is chasing, but their defeat to CSKA Moscow has opened the door for the challengers. Viking FK, Pirata FC and AS Dakar Sacré-Coeur are all demonstrating the form needed to challenge for automatic promotion.
The teams currently occupying the upper playoff positions also have plenty to fight for. Since 2nd through 9th all qualify for the promotion playoffs, finishing inside that group provides a major advantage compared with the teams sitting just outside it.
The middle of the table is equally fascinating. 10th place is the Friendly Cup cutoff, while 11th and 12th are King's Cup positions. That means every point gained by teams such as Tolyatti, Cobresal and Guangzhou could become extremely valuable as the season progresses.
And unlike many leagues, the bottom of the table carries no relegation threat. Teams ranked 23rd through 26th may be struggling for results, but they still have plenty of time to climb the standings without the pressure of relegation hanging over them.
40 Rounds to Go
Round 10 is now in the books, meaning 40 rounds remain in this 50-round League III campaign.
Viking's perfect recent run, Toronto's unexpected defeat, and the strong performances from Pirata and Dakar have made the promotion battle increasingly compelling. With so many matches still remaining, today's standings are far from permanent.
The big question heading into Round 11 is simple: Can anyone finally knock Toronto FC from the top, or will the league leaders respond immediately?
The road to League II is only beginning.
