Round 17 of the Premier World League Season 2026 produced one of the biggest shocks of the season so far, as 32nd-place Marítimo stunned 4th-place River Plate 5–1. There was also plenty of movement in the playoff battle, with several teams from the top 16 facing opponents either above or below them in the standings.
With the season lasting 62 rounds, Round 17 leaves 45 matches still to play, but the importance of every point is already becoming clear.
🏆 Boca Juniors keeps the top spot
1st-place Boca Juniors continued its excellent campaign with a 3–2 victory over 21st-place Unión Huaral at La Bombonera.
Boca had won four of its previous five matches coming into the game and maintained that strong momentum. The victory allows the league leaders to protect their position in the World Cup of Clubs qualification zone.
Unión Huaral remains in the Friendly Cup range, but another defeat makes a climb toward the playoff places more difficult.

3rd-place Gamba Osaka defeated 16th-place Puebla 5–4 in one of the round's most entertaining matches.
Gamba came into the contest with five consecutive wins and somehow managed to extend that remarkable run despite conceding four goals.
For Puebla, the defeat is especially painful because they are sitting right on the 16th-place playoff cutoff. They remain in playoff territory, but the teams immediately behind them will see this as an opportunity to close the gap.
🚨 Marítimo produces the shock of the round
The biggest story of Round 17 came in Buenos Aires.
32nd-place Marítimo demolished 4th-place River Plate 5–1 at Estadio Monumental.
River had entered the match with four straight victories, making the result even more stunning. Marítimo, meanwhile, had lost all five of its previous matches.
The victory is enormous for Marítimo. They are still at the very bottom of the table and remain in a relegation position, but this could be the result that finally sparks a revival.

7th-place Melgar defeated 30th-place Millonarios 2–1.
Melgar entered the round with an inconsistent record but got the job done against one of the bottom clubs.
The three points are valuable for Melgar's ambitions of remaining among the top four World Cup of Clubs contenders, or at minimum securing a strong playoff position.
Millonarios remains dangerously close to the bottom of the standings.
🇪🇨 Emelec crushes Chivas
One of the most dominant performances of the day came from 15th-place Emelec, who destroyed 31st-place Chivas 5–1.
Emelec's victory strengthens their position inside the top 16 playoff places.
For Chivas, however, the situation is becoming desperate. Sitting 31st means they are currently in one of the two relegation positions, and a heavy defeat like this does nothing to improve their situation.

6th-place New England Revolution defeated 27th-place Yokohama F. Marinos 2–1 at Gillette Stadium.
New England remains firmly in the playoff picture and continues to put pressure on the four teams above them.
Yokohama, meanwhile, remains outside the King's Cup positions and needs a significant turnaround to climb the table.
🇰🇷 Busan pulls off a major away win
7th-place Busan I'Park defeated 13th-place Santos Laguna 4–2.
This is an important result in the upper half of the table. Santos was already inside the playoff zone, but Busan's victory strengthens its own position and potentially puts additional pressure on the World Cup of Clubs places.
Santos will need to respond quickly to avoid slipping toward the playoff cutoff.
🇺🇸 Columbus Crew wins in Mexico
14th-place Columbus Crew defeated 26th-place Tigres 2–1.
Columbus entered the round inside the playoff positions and leaves with three valuable points.
Tigres, meanwhile, remains in the King's Cup zone. With only a handful of points separating many teams in the middle and lower portions of the standings, Tigres still has a chance to climb, but defeats like this make that task harder.

23rd-place Olimpia defeated 12th-place Houston Dynamo 2–1.
This is a huge result for Olimpia's fight to escape the King's Cup positions.
Houston entered the match comfortably inside the playoff places but failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Olimpia can now dream of a climb toward the Friendly Cup and eventually the playoff line.
🌟 Inter Miami wins the battle of the top 10
One of the biggest top-end results saw 5th-place Inter Miami defeat 10th-place Flamengo 3–1 at Maracanã.
Inter Miami entered the match with three victories in their previous five and produced another important result.
The win keeps Miami just outside the automatic World Cup of Clubs top four and puts significant pressure on the teams currently occupying those positions.
Flamengo remains in the playoff zone, but losing to a direct upper-table rival means they miss a chance to close the gap on the top four.
