Round 18 of the Premier World League 2026 brought another important set of results in Group C. With 18 of 62 rounds completed, there are still 44 rounds remaining, but the playoff picture is already beginning to take shape.
The key cutoff is 16th place, with the top 16 qualifying for the playoffs. The top four also earn a coveted place in the World Cup of Clubs. Teams finishing 17th–22nd qualify for the Friendly Cup, 23rd–26th go to the King's Cup, while the bottom two face relegation.
🔥 Norwich Thrash Hamburger SV
The biggest result of the round came at Carrow Road, where Norwich (27th) stunned Hamburger SV (9th), winning 4–3.
Hamburger entered the match comfortably inside the playoff positions, but this defeat represents a major missed opportunity. Norwich, meanwhile, finally have something to celebrate despite remaining deep in the standings.
The result also demonstrates just how unpredictable Group C can be, with a team outside the playoff race taking down a top-10 opponent.
🇯🇵 FC Tokyo Continue Their Excellent Form
Santa Tecla (31st) fell 0–3 to FC Tokyo (1st) at Estadio Las Delicias.
FC Tokyo's victory is another statement from the league leaders. They produced a convincing away performance and continue to look like one of the strongest candidates for a World Cup of Clubs berth.
Santa Tecla, meanwhile, remain near the bottom of the standings and need a dramatic turnaround to escape the relegation battle.
💪 Urawa Reds Beat Hansa Rostock
Hansa Rostock (12th) suffered a 1–2 home defeat to Urawa Reds (3rd).
This was a valuable result for Urawa, who remain firmly entrenched in the top four. The Japanese club continue to put pressure on FC Tokyo at the summit and are positioning themselves well for World Cup of Clubs qualification.
Hansa remain inside the playoff places, but dropping points against a direct contender could become costly.
⚡ LA Galaxy Climb With a Big Win
América (14th) lost 2–4 to LA Galaxy (4th) at Estadio Azteca.
LA Galaxy's four-goal performance keeps them in the World Cup of Clubs positions. They now have an important cushion over the teams chasing the top four.
For América, however, this is a painful result. They remain in the playoff zone, but the teams immediately behind them will see this as an opportunity to close the gap.
🇪🇸 Sevilla Defeat Atlético Madrid
Sevilla (8th) defeated Atlético Madrid (13th), 2–1, at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
This was a crucial six-point type of encounter between two teams in the playoff zone. Sevilla strengthen their position in eighth, while Atlético miss the chance to move higher up the table.
Both remain in playoff territory, but Atlético will want a quick response.
🇮🇹 Juventus Lose to Rosario
One of the round's biggest surprises came at Allianz Arena, where Juventus (30th) defeated Rosario (32nd), 4–2.
Neither team entered the match in playoff contention, but Juventus desperately needed the victory. Three points against another struggling side could be the start of a recovery.
Rosario, meanwhile, remain near the bottom and are still facing a difficult battle to escape the relegation places.
🏆 Manchester City Continue Their Charge
Manchester City (11th) defeated Borussia Dortmund (20th), 2–1, at the Etihad Stadium.
City continue to strengthen their position inside the playoff field. They are not yet in the top four, but their Round 18 victory keeps them within striking distance.
For Dortmund, the loss is particularly damaging. Sitting 20th, they remain in Friendly Cup territory and need points to get back into the playoff race.
😬 Crystal Palace Suffer Again
Ulsan Hyundai (17th) defeated Crystal Palace (26th), 3–2.
Ulsan's victory is massive because they are currently just outside the playoff cutoff. Three points against Palace puts them in position to challenge the teams in 15th and 16th.
Crystal Palace, however, remain near the bottom of the table and are dangerously close to the relegation battle.
💥 Babuna Shock Limon
Limon F.C. (28th) lost 1–4 to Babuna (5th).
Babuna delivered one of the strongest performances of the round, scoring four goals away from home. The victory keeps them firmly in the upper reaches of Group C.
Limon remain deep in the King's Cup zone and will need a significant turnaround.
🟦 Newcastle United Roll On
Bayer 04 Leverkusen (6th) fell 1–2 to Newcastle United (2nd).
This is another huge result for the top of the table. Newcastle continue their pursuit of FC Tokyo and remain firmly inside the World Cup of Clubs places.
Leverkusen remain sixth despite the defeat, meaning they are still safely inside the playoff zone.
🇺🇸 Austin FC Earn a Win
Austin FC (24th) defeated FC Edmonton (29th), 3–2, at Q2 Stadium.
Austin's victory gives them a valuable three points in the lower half of the standings. They remain in King's Cup territory, but a few more wins could dramatically improve their position.
🇺🇦 York United Hold Off Cerezo Osaka
York United FC (18th) defeated Cerezo Osaka (7th), 2–1.
This is another major upset with significant playoff implications.
Cerezo Osaka remain inside the top 16, but dropping points to an 18th-place opponent is a missed opportunity. York United, meanwhile, are now knocking on the playoff door from the Friendly Cup positions.
🇧🇴 Bolívar Beat Necaxa
Necaxa (15th) lost 1–3 to Bolívar (4th).
Bolívar continue their excellent campaign and remain firmly in the World Cup of Clubs positions.
Necaxa are still inside the playoff field at 15th, but the defeat leaves them with very little room for error.
🇦🇷 Newell's and Vegalta Share the Points
Newell's (19th) and Vegalta Sendai (16th) drew 2–2.
This is a particularly interesting result because Vegalta are sitting directly on the playoff cutoff.
Dropping two points against a 19th-place opponent could prove costly later in the season, while Newell's gain a valuable point in their attempt to move toward the top 16.
🌟 Red Bulls Edge Zenit
New York Red Bulls (23rd) defeated Zenit Saint Petersburg (22nd), 3–2 at Red Bull Arena.
The victory is extremely important for the Red Bulls. They remain in King's Cup territory but now have momentum and a chance to climb toward the Friendly Cup positions.
Zenit, meanwhile, remain in 22nd and currently occupy the final Friendly Cup position.
📊 Group C – Round 18 Picture
🏆 World Cup of Clubs: Top Four
The biggest winners among the elite were FC Tokyo, Urawa Reds, Newcastle United and LA Galaxy.
All four secured victories and remain in the coveted top-four positions. Their consistency is beginning to separate them from much of the chasing pack.
🎟️ Playoff Zone: 1st–16th
The playoff race remains highly competitive.
Bayer Leverkusen, Babuna, Sevilla, Hamburger SV, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Hansa Rostock, América and Necaxa all remain in the top 16, but several suffered defeats this round.
The most vulnerable teams are those around the 14th–16th positions, particularly after the results involving Ulsan Hyundai and Newell's.
🟡 Friendly Cup: 17th–22nd
Ulsan Hyundai's victory is one of the most important results for this group of teams. At 17th, they are now right on the doorstep of the playoff places.
York United (18th) also gained three points against a top-seven opponent, while Newell's (19th) earned a point against Vegalta.
Zenit (22nd) remain in the final Friendly Cup spot but will be under pressure after their loss to New York Red Bulls.
🏆 King's Cup: 23rd–26th
The King's Cup positions remain extremely competitive. New York Red Bulls (23rd) and Austin FC (24th) both picked up victories, giving them momentum.
Crystal Palace (26th) remain in a dangerous position following their defeat to Ulsan.
🔴 Relegation Battle
The relegation fight remains particularly tense. Santa Tecla (31st) suffered another heavy defeat, while several other clubs near the bottom are struggling for consistency.
The gap between the bottom clubs and the teams immediately above them could become increasingly important as the season progresses.
🔮 Round 18 Takeaway
Group C is developing into a fascinating three-way battle.
At the top, FC Tokyo, Urawa Reds, Newcastle United and LA Galaxy are establishing themselves as the early World Cup of Clubs contenders.
Behind them, the playoff race is far from settled. Manchester City, Sevilla, Babuna and Leverkusen remain in strong positions, while teams such as Ulsan Hyundai and York United are applying pressure from outside the top 16.
And Round 18 showed that nobody is safe: Norwich shocked Hamburger SV, York United defeated Cerezo Osaka, and Newcastle took down Leverkusen.
With 44 rounds still to play, there is plenty of time for the standings to change—but after 18 rounds, the battle for those 16 playoff places is already heating up.
