Round 17 of the Premier World League Season 2026 delivered several dramatic results in Group C, including a huge upset involving Crystal Palace and 3rd-place Babuna, a five-goal thriller between Hamburg and Santa Tecla, and important wins for several teams battling to stay inside the top 16 playoff positions.
With the season consisting of 62 rounds, there are still 45 rounds remaining. That means there is plenty of time for the standings to change, but the battle for the top four and the playoff cutoff is already becoming intense.
🏆 FC Tokyo strengthens its grip on first
1st-place FC Tokyo continued its outstanding campaign with a 4–3 victory over 11th-place Hansa Rostock at Ajinomoto Stadium.
Tokyo entered the match with four wins in its previous five games and once again found a way to collect three points.
The victory keeps FC Tokyo at the summit and firmly inside the World Cup of Clubs qualification places. Hansa, meanwhile, remains comfortably inside the playoff zone despite the defeat.
🇯🇵 Urawa Reds win another important match
5th-place Urawa Reds defeated 18th-place Union Española 5–1.
Urawa came into the match with four victories in its previous five and continued that excellent run in emphatic fashion.
The five-goal performance keeps Urawa right on the heels of the top four. The Japanese club currently occupies a playoff position but will be looking to break into the World Cup of Clubs top four.
Union Española remains in the Friendly Cup zone, sitting just outside the playoff positions.
🇩🇪 Hamburg SV wins a seven-goal thriller
9th-place Hamburg SV defeated 31st-place Santa Tecla 5–2.
Hamburg's recent form had been inconsistent, but the club produced an impressive attacking display to take all three points.
The result strengthens Hamburg's position inside the top 16 playoff places.
Santa Tecla, meanwhile, remains in the relegation battle. Sitting 31st means they are just one place above the bottom two and desperately need a run of positive results.
🇧🇴 The Strongest shocks América
One of the most important lower-table results saw 25th-place The Strongest defeat 23rd-place América 3–2.
Both teams were outside the playoff positions, with América currently occupying a King's Cup spot.
The Strongest's victory gives them three valuable points in the fight to climb toward the Friendly Cup positions and eventually challenge for the playoffs.
For América, the defeat is another setback in their attempt to escape the King's Cup zone.
🇺🇸 LA Galaxy edges Sevilla
16th-place LA Galaxy picked up a vital 3–2 victory over 7th-place Sevilla.
This may be one of the most important results of the round from a playoff perspective.
LA Galaxy entered the match sitting exactly on the playoff cutoff, meaning every point is crucial. Defeating a team in seventh place gives Galaxy a massive boost in its attempt to remain among the top 16.
Sevilla, meanwhile, misses an opportunity to strengthen its position near the top four.
🇪🇸 Atlético Madrid defeats Juventus
13th-place Atlético Madrid defeated 30th-place Juventus 3–2 at the Metropolitano.
Atlético remains safely inside the playoff positions and collects three important points against a team near the bottom of the table.
Juventus, currently 30th, continues to struggle and is in serious danger of being dragged deeper into the relegation battle.
🇦🇷 Rosario Central stuns Manchester City
Perhaps the biggest shock of Round 17 came from Argentina.
32nd-place Rosario Central defeated 12th-place Manchester City 4–1.
Rosario entered the match with an awful run of form, having lost four of its previous five games. Manchester City, meanwhile, had been playing well.
The result is enormous for Rosario's survival hopes. They remain 32nd and therefore in a relegation position, but this victory could provide the confidence needed for a late-season revival.
For Manchester City, this is a damaging result. City had been comfortably inside the playoff positions but now drops valuable points against one of the bottom teams.
🇩🇪 Dortmund defeats Ulsan
10th-place Borussia Dortmund defeated 15th-place Ulsan Hyundai FC 2–1.
This was an important playoff battle between two teams already inside the top 16.
Dortmund's victory allows them to strengthen their position in the playoff race, while Ulsan will be disappointed to lose three points to a direct rival.
With both teams sitting in playoff territory, this could prove significant when the final standings are determined.
😱 Crystal Palace pulls off the upset of the round
28th-place Crystal Palace stunned 3rd-place Babuna, winning 3–2 at Selhurst Park.
Babuna had been one of Group C's strongest teams and entered the match in excellent form, having won four of its previous five.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, was sitting deep in the lower half of the standings.
The victory is therefore a huge surprise and gives Palace an important three points toward escaping the King's Cup zone.
For Babuna, the defeat is costly. They remain in the World Cup of Clubs qualification positions, but dropping points to 28th-place Crystal Palace is a major missed opportunity.
🇩🇪 Bayer Leverkusen survives Norwich test
6th-place Bayer Leverkusen defeated 26th-place Norwich City 3–2.
Leverkusen continues to challenge for the top four and automatic World Cup of Clubs qualification.
Norwich remains in the King's Cup zone, and this defeat makes climbing into the Friendly Cup positions more difficult.
🇺🇸 Newcastle United wins again
4th-place Newcastle United defeated 22nd-place Austin FC 4–2 at St James' Park.
Newcastle entered the round sitting in the final World Cup of Clubs qualification position and did exactly what was needed: win.
The victory keeps Newcastle ahead of the teams chasing the top four.
Austin, meanwhile, remains in the Friendly Cup zone, but the defeat leaves them vulnerable to teams below them.
🇨🇦 Edmonton and York United share the points
27th-place FC Edmonton and 21st-place York United played out a 2–2 draw.
The point does little to transform either club's position.
York remains in the Friendly Cup range, while Edmonton remains in the King's Cup/lower-table battle.
🇲🇽 Cerezo Osaka defeats Necaxa
8th-place Cerezo Osaka defeated 14th-place Necaxa 3–2.
This was another important result between two playoff teams.
Cerezo strengthens its position in the top 16 and continues to look toward the top four. Necaxa remains inside the playoff zone despite the defeat, but the teams behind them will see an opportunity to close the gap.
🇧🇴 Bolívar earns a point against Newell's
2nd-place Bolívar and 19th-place Newell's played out a 3–3 draw.
Bolívar entered the match in outstanding form, having won four of its previous five matches, but Newell's managed to hold the second-place team to a high-scoring draw.
The point keeps Bolívar firmly in the World Cup of Clubs positions, although they miss an opportunity to put additional pressure on FC Tokyo.
Newell's remains in the Friendly Cup zone.
🇯🇵 Vegalta Sendai beats New York Red Bulls
17th-place Vegalta Sendai defeated 24th-place New York Red Bulls 2–2—with the score ending level.
The draw means Vegalta remains just outside the playoff positions, while New York Red Bulls stays in the King's Cup zone.
Vegalta is particularly well positioned to make a push for the top 16, sitting only one place outside the playoff cutoff.
🇷🇺 Zenit and Limón draw
20th-place Zenit Saint Petersburg and 29th-place Limón FC finished 3–3.
Zenit remains in the Friendly Cup positions, while Limón continues to battle in the lower half of the table.
The point is more valuable for Limón as they attempt to climb away from the bottom of Group C.
📊 Group C Qualification Picture
The competition structure remains:
| Position | Qualification |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | 🏆 World Cup of Clubs |
| 5–16 | ⚽ Playoffs |
| 17–22 | 🟢 Friendly Cup |
| 23–26 | 🏆 King's Cup |
| 27–30 | Lower-table battle |
| 31–32 | 🔻 Relegation |
🏆 World Cup of Clubs race
FC Tokyo, Bolívar, Babuna and Newcastle United occupy the four automatic World Cup of Clubs positions entering Round 17.
However, Urawa Reds, Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla remain close enough to challenge for those places. Newcastle's 4–2 win over Austin was particularly important because it allows the fourth-place club to maintain its position.
⚽ Playoff battle
The playoff positions run all the way through 16th place, making LA Galaxy's 3–2 win over Sevilla especially important.
Teams such as Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, Cerezo Osaka and Ulsan all strengthened their playoff claims with results involving teams around them.
Meanwhile, Vegalta Sendai sits 17th, making them one of the most obvious teams looking to break into the top 16.
🟢 Friendly Cup battle
The 17th–22nd positions remain extremely competitive.
Vegalta Sendai, Union Española, Newell's, Zenit and York United are all positioned in this section, and even a short winning streak could propel one of them into playoff territory.
🏆 King's Cup and relegation fight
The bottom of the table remains particularly tense.
Rosario Central, despite its sensational 4–1 victory over Manchester City, remains 32nd and in a relegation position. Santa Tecla sits 31st, meaning both clubs currently occupy the two relegation spots.
But with 45 rounds still remaining, neither team is remotely out of the fight.
⭐ Round 17 Result of the Round
Rosario Central 4–1 Manchester City gets the nod for the biggest result, narrowly ahead of Crystal Palace's victory over Babuna.
A 32nd-place team defeating a top-12 opponent by three goals is exactly the kind of result that can completely change the momentum of a season.
And that's the story of Group C after Round 17: the table may look settled in places, but the 62-round season is still wide open.
