⚽ Necaxa Edges FC Tokyo
Necaxa (14th) picked up an important 3–2 win over FC Tokyo (1st).
This is one of the biggest results of the round. FC Tokyo entered the match as the Group C leader, but Necaxa managed to knock them off.
For Necaxa, the three points are enormous in the playoff race. For FC Tokyo, it's a reminder that even the league leaders aren't guaranteed points against teams fighting for their own postseason ambitions.
💥 New York Red Bulls Crush The Strongest
One of the round's most convincing results came from New York Red Bulls (32nd), who shocked The Strongest (21st) 5–1.
It's a massive result for the Red Bulls, who desperately need points at the bottom of the standings.
The Strongest, meanwhile, misses a valuable opportunity to move higher from the Friendly Cup/King's Cup area.
🇺🇸 LA Galaxy Wins in Saint Petersburg
LA Galaxy (12th) defeated Zenit Saint Petersburg (17th) 3–1.
Galaxy continues to occupy a playoff position, and this victory gives them another valuable three points toward securing their place in the top 16.
Zenit remains just outside the playoff cutoff and will be frustrated by another missed opportunity to break into the postseason positions.
🇯🇵 Vegalta Sendai Stuns Atlético Madrid
Vegalta Sendai (26th) produced an important 3–2 victory over Atlético Madrid (10th).
This is a major upset based on the standings.
Atlético was comfortably inside the playoff zone, while Vegalta entered the match in King's Cup territory. The victory gives Sendai a much-needed boost and could potentially spark a climb up the table.
Atlético, meanwhile, loses three important points in the playoff battle.
6🇧🇴 Bolívar Dominates Rosario
Bolívar (5th) put together one of the strongest performances of the round, defeating Rosario (28th) 4–1.
Bolívar remains just outside the top four, making this victory particularly important. The club is firmly in the playoff zone and continues to put pressure on the teams competing for World Cup of Clubs qualification.
Rosario remains in the lower part of the table and needs points quickly.
🇯🇵 Cerezo Osaka Defeats Dortmund
Cerezo Osaka (9th) earned an important 3–2 victory over Borussia Dortmund (11th).
This was a crucial playoff battle between two teams already inside the top 16.
Cerezo takes the three points and strengthens its position, while Dortmund drops valuable points in a crowded section of the standings.
🏰 Crystal Palace Wins Again
Crystal Palace (31st) defeated FC Edmonton (29th) 3–1.
Both clubs are near the bottom, so this was an important result in the fight to avoid the relegation places.
Crystal Palace's three points could prove particularly valuable later in the season as the clubs at the bottom fight to escape the danger zone.
⚫ Newcastle United Survives Babuma Thriller
Newcastle United (2nd) and Babuma (3rd) produced one of the most entertaining matches of the round, with Newcastle winning 4–3.
This was a huge game at the top of Group C.
Newcastle entered the match in second place, while Babuma was sitting in third, meaning both sides were fighting directly in the World Cup of Clubs qualification zone.
Newcastle's victory is enormous. Not only do they take three points from a direct rival, but they also prevent Babuma from gaining ground on them.
Seven goals, a top-of-the-table matchup, and three crucial points—this was one of the defining games of Round 28.
⚔️ Norwich and Ulsan Share a Tight Battle
Norwich United (13th) defeated Ulsan Hyundai FC (20th) 3–2.
Norwich remains in the playoff zone, and the three points give them some valuable breathing room.
Ulsan, meanwhile, remains outside the playoffs and currently sits in the Friendly Cup range.
😮 Manchester City Falls to Santa Tecla
Another significant upset saw Santa Tecla (27th) defeat Manchester City (16th) 2–1.

Santa Tecla gets a massive three points in its attempt to climb out of the lower portion of the table, while Manchester City now has to be careful with the teams chasing from below.
🤝 Hansa Rostock Holds Juventus
Hansa Rostock (13th) and Juventus (25th) finished level at 2–2.
The point keeps Hansa inside the playoff picture, although they would have preferred all three points.
Juventus, meanwhile, earns a valuable point in the King's Cup battle.
🇪🇸 Sevilla Gets a Big Win
Unión Española (15th) suffered a 3–2 defeat to Sevilla (7th).
Sevilla's victory strengthens its position inside the playoffs, while Unión Española remains just inside the top 16 despite the defeat.
With the playoff cutoff sitting at 16th, teams around that position simply cannot afford many more losses.
🇲🇽 América Falls to Limón FC
Limón FC (22nd) defeated América (24th) 3–2.
This is an important result in the lower half of the standings.
Limón earns three points that could help them move toward the Friendly Cup positions, while América remains in the King's Cup range and will need to improve quickly.
💙 Bayer Leverkusen Ends the Round in Style
The final game produced another dominant performance as Bayer 04 Leverkusen (6th) crushed Austin FC (19th) 5–1.
Leverkusen continues to look like a serious contender near the top of Group C.
At sixth place, they are already comfortably inside the playoff zone and remain within striking distance of the top four.
Austin, meanwhile, remains in the Friendly Cup range and needs a run of positive results to challenge for the playoffs.
🏆 The Playoff Race
After 28 rounds, the top 16 remain in playoff position, but Round 28 demonstrated just how quickly things can change.
Several playoff teams earned important victories, including Hamburger SV, LA Galaxy, Bolívar, Cerezo Osaka, Newcastle United, Norwich United, Sevilla and Bayer Leverkusen.
However, there were also some damaging defeats.
Atlético Madrid's loss to Vegalta Sendai and Manchester City's defeat against Santa Tecla are particularly noteworthy because both teams entered the round inside the playoff zone.
City is especially vulnerable because 16th place is the final playoff position.
Teams outside the top 16 will be watching closely and looking for opportunities to move upward.
🌎 World Cup of Clubs Race
The biggest story at the top was undoubtedly Newcastle United's 4–3 victory over Babuma.
Both teams were occupying positions 2nd and 3rd, respectively, making this a direct battle for World Cup of Clubs qualification.
Newcastle's victory gives them an enormous boost.
Meanwhile, Bolívar, sitting in 5th, kept its challenge alive with a 4–1 victory, while Bayer Leverkusen (6th) continued to apply pressure with a 5–1 demolition of Austin FC.
With the top four qualifying for the World Cup of Clubs, the teams currently just outside those positions have plenty of motivation to keep pushing.

There is also plenty happening outside the playoff positions.
17th–22nd qualifies for the Friendly Cup, while 23rd–26th earns a place in the King's Cup.
Teams such as Zenit Saint Petersburg, Ulsan Hyundai, Austin FC and Limón FC are currently fighting around the Friendly Cup area.
Meanwhile, clubs such as Juventus, América and Vegalta Sendai are battling around the King's Cup positions.
Vegalta's victory over Atlético Madrid could be particularly important if they can use it as the beginning of a winning streak.
🚨 Relegation Battle
At the bottom of the table, the pressure is increasing.
The bottom two positions are relegation spots, meaning teams such as New York Red Bulls, Crystal Palace and FC Edmonton need to start accumulating points.
New York's spectacular 5–1 victory over The Strongest is exactly the type of result they need. Whether they can build momentum from it remains to be seen.
