Round 28 of the Premier World League Season 2026 brought another busy slate of matches in Group A, and this time there were some huge scorelines, important upsets, and valuable points at both ends of the table.
With the season consisting of 62 games, Round 28 means teams have now completed almost half of their regular-season campaign. The race for the playoff positions (1st–16th) is becoming increasingly important, while the battle for the top four World Cup of Clubs places remains wide open.
⚽ Round 28 Results
The round opened with an impressive performance from Cruz Azul (11th), who defeated Bolognesi (14th) 4–2. Cruz Azul's victory strengthens their position inside the playoff zone, while Bolognesi will be looking to bounce back quickly.
Arsenal (20th) produced an important result at home, defeating Alianza Lima (9th) 1–0. Alianza entered the match sitting comfortably in the playoff positions, so dropping three points against a team outside the top 16 could prove costly as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, Cienciano (4th) continued its excellent campaign with a convincing 3–0 victory over São Paulo (21st). Cienciano's win keeps the club firmly in the hunt for one of the coveted top-four World Cup of Clubs positions.
Universitario (6th) also picked up three points, beating Calvary FC (28th) 4–2. Universitario remains comfortably inside the playoff places and continues to put pressure on the teams above them.
🔥 Valencia Wins a Thriller
One of the more entertaining matches saw Valencia (3rd) defeat Libertad (27th) 3–2.
The victory keeps Valencia firmly in the top-four battle, which is particularly important because finishing in the top four guarantees qualification for the World Cup of Clubs.
But Valencia had to work for it, with Libertad pushing the third-place team all the way.
Another major result came from Deportivo Cali (5th), who absolutely exploded offensively in a 5–2 victory over Chelsea (23rd).
Cali remains right on the heels of the top four, while Chelsea's position outside the playoff zone means every dropped point makes the climb toward the top 16 more difficult.
6🔴 Manchester United Held
Real Racing (22nd) earned a valuable point against Manchester United (2nd), with the teams playing to a 2–2 draw.
For Real Racing, taking two points off a team near the very top of the table is a major result. Manchester United, however, will probably view this as two points dropped in the race for the top four.
Feyenoord (24th) also pulled off a notable result, defeating Sporting Cristal (8th) 2–1.
Sporting Cristal entered the match inside the playoff zone, making this a valuable opportunity missed. Feyenoord, meanwhile, gets three much-needed points in its attempt to climb the table.
⚔️ More Important Playoff Battles
Santa Fe (16th) and Montreal Impact (26th) played to a 2–2 draw.
Santa Fe currently sits right on the playoff cutoff, making every point extremely important. A win would have been preferable, but avoiding defeat keeps them in 16th-place territory.
Deportivo Pereira (17th) defeated U de Chile (30th) 3–2 in another important match.
Pereira is particularly interesting because it is sitting just outside the playoff zone. The victory puts pressure on the teams currently occupying positions 15 and 16.
Atlético Grau (13th) and Cesar Vallejo (10th) couldn't be separated, drawing 3–3 in a six-goal thriller.
Both teams remain in the playoff picture, but the draw means neither was able to make significant progress toward the top four.
💥 Aucas and Sport Boys Put on a Show
Aucas (7th) produced one of the biggest attacking performances of the round, defeating Hong Kong FC (8th) 5–2.
This was a huge result between two teams already sitting inside the playoff positions. Aucas gains three points and strengthens its position, while Hong Kong FC suffers a significant setback in the increasingly competitive playoff race.
Then came perhaps the most dominant performance of Round 28.
Sport Boys (1st) crushed Danubio (30th) 5–1.
The league leaders showed exactly why they are sitting at the top of Group A. Five goals and three points keep Sport Boys firmly in control of their campaign and, most importantly, strengthen their position in the World Cup of Clubs race.
🚨 Drama at the Bottom
Southam (32nd) earned a much-needed 2–1 victory over Pegasus (31st).
Both teams are at the bottom end of the standings, so this was an especially important result in the fight to avoid finishing in the two relegation positions.
Deportivo Saprissa (19th) also picked up a valuable road victory, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC (15th) 2–1.
Vancouver entered the match inside the playoff zone, so this is a frustrating result for them. Saprissa, meanwhile, moves closer to the teams fighting for the top 16.
Finally, Chankas (10th) and San Jose (25th) battled to a 2–2 draw.
Chankas remains in the playoff picture, but the draw gives San Jose an important point in its efforts to climb out of the lower portion of the table.
🏆 The Playoff Race
The playoff cutoff remains 16th place, meaning every team currently ranked 1st through 16th is in position to qualify for the postseason.
Several Round 28 results directly affected that battle.
Cruz Azul's 4–2 win helps consolidate its playoff position, while Deportivo Pereira's victory over U de Chile puts Pereira right on the heels of the top 16.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe's draw keeps them sitting at the playoff cutoff, but the gap between the playoff teams and those immediately below them could become increasingly important over the next several rounds.
The biggest concern for teams such as Vancouver Whitecaps FC is that a loss can suddenly make their playoff position vulnerable.
🌎 The World Cup of Clubs Race
The top four teams at the end of the season qualify for the World Cup of Clubs, making the battle at the top particularly intense.
Round 28 was a good one for Cienciano, Valencia, and Sport Boys.
Sport Boys remains the team everyone is chasing, while Valencia and Cienciano continue to occupy prime positions in the top four.
Deportivo Cali, currently 5th, is also knocking on the door. Its 5–2 demolition of Chelsea shows that Cali isn't going away quietly.
And with Manchester United sitting 2nd, the 2–2 draw against Real Racing represents a missed opportunity to strengthen its position further.
🏆 Friendly Cup & King's Cup Battles
For teams outside the playoff places, there are still important goals to chase.
- 1st–16th: Playoff qualification
- 1st–4th: World Cup of Clubs qualification
- 17th–22nd: Friendly Cup qualification
- 23rd–26th: King's Cup qualification
- Bottom two: Relegation
That makes the middle and lower sections of Group A incredibly important.
The 17th–22nd positions are particularly competitive, with clubs trying to remain within the Friendly Cup range while simultaneously looking upward toward the playoff cutoff.
Teams in 23rd–26th have the King's Cup as their current target, but they also need to be careful not to fall into the bottom two.
At the very bottom, Southam and Pegasus are fighting to avoid the relegation spots, while clubs such as Danubio and others near the bottom will need a run of positive results soon.
