Round 16 of League III Season 2026 delivered another action-packed day in Group A, highlighted by a huge win for Viking FK, a costly draw for Pirata FC, and several important victories in the promotion play-off race.
With 50 rounds in the season, there are still 34 rounds remaining, meaning the standings can change dramatically. However, the battle for automatic promotion and the nine play-off positions is becoming increasingly fascinating.
As a reminder, 1st place earns direct promotion to League II, while 2nd–9th qualify for the promotion play-offs. 10th enters the Friendly Cup, and 11th–12th qualify for the King's Cup. There is no relegation from League III.
⚽ Round 16 Results
Shandong Luneng Taishan 1–5 Toronto FC
Toronto FC produced arguably the most impressive performance of the round, crushing Shandong Luneng Taishan 5–1 away from home.
Toronto entered Round 16 in 3rd place, while Shandong were 17th. After losing to Toronto in Round 15, Shandong bounced back with a 2–1 victory over Raja, but this time they were completely overwhelmed.
For Toronto, the five-goal performance is a major statement in the promotion race.
Result: Shandong Luneng Taishan 1–5 Toronto FC
Chaco Petrolero 3–2 Atlético Ottawa
Chaco Petrolero secured a valuable 3–2 victory over Atlético Ottawa.
Chaco started the round in 6th place, meaning they were firmly inside the promotion play-off zone. After losing 4–2 to Toronto in Round 15, this was exactly the kind of response they needed.
Ottawa, meanwhile, continue to fight their way upward from the lower half of the table.
Result: Chaco Petrolero 3–2 Atlético Ottawa
Club Deportivo Palestino 1–2 AZ Alkmaar
AZ Alkmaar continued their remarkable run by defeating Palestino 2–1.
After previously beating Audax Italiano and Deportes Iquique, AZ have now added another higher-ranked opponent to their list of victims.
Palestino started the round in 8th and were looking to recover after losing to Ottawa in Round 15. Instead, AZ claimed another three points.
Result: Palestino 1–2 AZ Alkmaar
Deportes Iquique 3–2 Excelsior Rotterdam
Deportes Iquique bounced back from their Round 15 defeat to AZ with a 3–2 victory over Excelsior Rotterdam.
Iquique entered the round in 9th, right on the edge of the promotion play-off places. The three points could prove extremely important as the teams around them battle for the top nine.
Excelsior, meanwhile, suffered another narrow defeat after beating Audax in the previous round.
Result: Iquique 3–2 Excelsior
Audax Italiano 2–1 SC Heerenveen
Audax Italiano returned to winning ways with a 2–1 victory over SC Heerenveen.
After consecutive losses to AZ and Excelsior, Audax desperately needed a result. The win gives them an important boost in their attempt to remain among the promotion contenders.
Heerenveen had famously defeated league leaders Pirata FC in Round 15, but couldn't repeat that giant-killing performance here.
Result: Audax Italiano 2–1 Heerenveen
Pirata FC 3–3 Casa Sports
The biggest result from the perspective of the title race was a 3–3 draw between Pirata FC and Casa Sports.
Pirata entered the round in 1st place and had already lost to Heerenveen in Round 15. Dropping another two points means their grip on the automatic-promotion position is becoming less secure.
Casa Sports, who started the round in 20th, deserve enormous credit for taking a point from the league leaders.
Result: Pirata FC 3–3 Casa Sports
PFC CSKA Moscow 2–4 AS Dakar Sacré-Cœur
AS Dakar Sacré-Cœur continued their excellent campaign with a convincing 4–2 victory over CSKA Moscow.
Dakar began the round in 4th place, making this another crucial win in their pursuit of promotion. Their recent form keeps them firmly among the teams capable of challenging for the top position as well as the play-offs.
CSKA, meanwhile, couldn't build on their Round 15 draw with Casa Sports.
Result: CSKA Moscow 2–4 Dakar Sacré-Cœur
Dynamo Moscow 3–2 AS La Guelasse
Dynamo Moscow earned a hard-fought 3–2 victory over AS La Guelasse.
Dynamo started the round at the bottom of the table in 26th, so this is an extremely important result for them. While there is no relegation from League III, Dynamo will certainly want to climb as high as possible and avoid remaining at the foot of the standings.
La Guelasse, who had started the round 21st, were unable to follow up their previous results with another victory.
Result: Dynamo Moscow 3–2 La Guelasse
Defence Force 3–2 FC Akron Tolyatti
Defence Force defeated Akron Tolyatti 3–2 in another closely contested match.
Defence Force started the round in 13th, while Akron were 7th and inside the promotion play-off positions. This makes the victory particularly valuable for Defence Force, while Akron missed an opportunity to strengthen their position among the leading nine.
Result: Defence Force 3–2 Akron Tolyatti
Raja 1–3 Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao
Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao produced an impressive 3–1 away victory over Raja.
Raja began the round in 12th, just outside the play-off zone, while Guangzhou were 18th. The three points give Guangzhou an opportunity to begin climbing the standings.
For Raja, however, this is another setback after their Round 15 defeat to Shandong Luneng Taishan.
Result: Raja 1–3 Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao
Coquimbo Unido 3–2 RB Leipzig
Coquimbo Unido defeated RB Leipzig 3–2 in a five-goal thriller.
Coquimbo entered the match in 15th and Leipzig in 13th, so this was an important mid-table battle. Coquimbo's victory allows them to put pressure on the teams above them and potentially start a push toward the play-off places.
Result: Coquimbo Unido 3–2 RB Leipzig
Cobresal 4–1 FC Union Berlin
Cobresal delivered another dominant performance, defeating Union Berlin 4–1.
Cobresal started Round 16 in 5th place, firmly inside the promotion play-off positions. After beating RB Leipzig in Round 15, they have now followed that result with another convincing win.
Union Berlin, who entered the round 25th, had no answer to Cobresal's attack.
Result: Cobresal 4–1 Union Berlin
Viking FK 3–2 FC Köln
Viking FK secured a crucial 3–2 victory over FC Köln.
Viking entered the round in 2nd place and desperately needed to capitalize on Pirata FC dropping points. They did exactly that.
The victory puts Viking in an excellent position in the automatic-promotion race, particularly after Pirata's second consecutive round without a victory.
Result: Viking FK 3–2 FC Köln
🔥 Automatic Promotion Race Heating Up
The biggest storyline from Round 16 is undoubtedly the situation at the top.
Pirata FC, the league leaders entering the round, could only draw 3–3 with Casa Sports. That's their second consecutive round without a victory after losing 4–3 to Heerenveen in Round 15.
Meanwhile, Viking FK won 3–2.
That combination makes the automatic-promotion race extremely interesting. Viking now has significant momentum and will be looking to take advantage of any further Pirata slip-ups.
Toronto FC also made a huge statement by destroying Shandong Luneng Taishan 5–1, while Dakar Sacré-Cœur continued their excellent form with a 4–2 victory.
📈 Promotion Play-Off Battle
The battle for positions 2–9 is becoming increasingly crowded.
Several of the teams that began the round inside or around the play-off zone picked up important wins:
- Viking FK – 3–2 win
- Toronto FC – 5–1 win
- Dakar Sacré-Cœur – 4–2 win
- Chaco Petrolero – 3–2 win
- Cobresal – 4–1 win
- Audax Italiano – 2–1 win
- Deportes Iquique – 3–2 win
On the other hand, Raja and Akron Tolyatti suffered defeats, potentially allowing their rivals to gain ground.
The result is a highly competitive middle-to-upper section where just a few victories—or defeats—could dramatically change the play-off picture.
