League II 2026 Group D Round 21 Recap

League 2 – Group D

2026 Season – Round 21 Recap (of 46)

At the halfway stage of the 46-round campaign, Group D is shaping up to be one of the most competitive divisions in League 2, especially at the top.

🔝 Automatic Promotion Race

Leading the table is Peñarol with 44 points. Their consistency (14 wins) and strong goal difference (+27) keep them in pole position for automatic promotion to the World Premier League.

Just behind them:

  • Club Destroyers – 44 pts

  • Corinthians – 44 pts

Three teams tied on 44 points after 21 matches — separated only by goal difference. The race for first place could go down to the final weeks.

🎯 Playoff Positions (2nd–9th)

Currently in the playoff spots:

  • 4️⃣ Aston Villa F.C. – 43 pts

  • 5️⃣ Banfield – 38 pts

  • 6️⃣ FC Nantes – 37 pts

  • 7️⃣ Always Ready – 34 pts

  • 8️⃣ Unión La Calera – 31 pts

  • 9️⃣ Guayaquil City F.C. – 31 pts

The drop from 4th to 5th is already five points, suggesting a developing top-four breakaway. However, the battle between 6th and 12th is extremely tight.

🏆 Cup Qualification Spots

  • 🔟 Real Sociedad – 31 pts (Friendly Cup qualification)

  • 1️⃣1️⃣ Al Masry SC – 31 pts (King’s Cup spot)

Goal difference is currently making the difference in this congested mid-table cluster.

⚠️ Relegation Zone

The bottom two are beginning to drift:

  • 23rd: K.R.C. Genk – 12 pts

  • 24th: Canon Yaoundé – 9 pts

Both clubs are in serious danger of relegation to League III. With 25 rounds remaining, survival is still mathematically possible, but they must turn around form quickly.

📊 Mid-Season Overview

  • Three-way tie for first place.

  • Top four beginning to separate from the chasing pack.

  • 6th through 12th separated by just a few points.

  • Relegation battle tightening, with a noticeable gap forming above 23rd.

With exactly half the season still to play, Group D promises drama at both ends of the table. Promotion dreams and relegation fears are intensifying as Round 22 approaches.
