League II 2026 Group D Round 20 Recap

League 2 – Group D

2026 Season – Round 20 Recap (of 46)

Twenty rounds into the 46-match campaign, Group D is shaping up to be one of the tightest divisions in League 2 — especially at the top.

🔝 Automatic Promotion Race

Leading the standings after Round 20 is Peñarol with 41 points.

They’ve combined attacking efficiency with solid defensive performances and currently occupy the only automatic promotion place to the World Premier League.

Hot on their heels:

  • 2️⃣ Club Destroyers – 41 pts

  • 3️⃣ Corinthians – 41 pts

  • 4️⃣ Aston Villa – 40 pts

Just one point separates 1st from 4th — making this one of the most intense promotion battles across all League 2 groups.

🏆 Playoff Zone (2nd–9th)

Currently in playoff positions:

2️⃣ Club Destroyers
3️⃣ Corinthians
4️⃣ Aston Villa
5️⃣ FC Nantes – 37 pts
6️⃣ Banfield – 35 pts
7️⃣ Always Ready – 34 pts
8️⃣ Unión La Calera – 31 pts
9️⃣ Real Sociedad – 31 pts

The gap between 5th and 9th is razor thin, and with more than half the season remaining, expect constant movement in these positions.

🎟 Mid-Table Stakes

🔟 Al Masry SC – 31 pts
(Current Friendly Cup qualification spot)

1️⃣1️⃣ El Nacional – 30 pts
(Current King’s Cup qualification spot)

Just behind them, Guayaquil City and Bolton Wanderers remain within touching distance of both cup spots and the playoff positions.

⚠️ Lower Table & Relegation Battle

Several clubs are in danger of being dragged into a survival fight:

  • Atlético Osasuna

  • SV Meppen

  • Alto Perú

  • Al Mokawloon

  • Far Rabat

  • FSV Mainz 05

  • Bella Vista

  • Rio Ave

🚨 Relegation Zone (23rd–24th)

23️⃣ K.R.C. Genk – 12 pts
24️⃣ Canon Yaoundé – 9 pts

Both sides are struggling defensively and need a major turnaround in form to avoid relegation to League III.

📊 Round 20 Summary

  • Four teams are separated by just one point at the top.

  • The playoff zone remains volatile from 5th through 9th.

  • Friendly Cup and King’s Cup positions are still wide open.

  • The relegation fight is beginning to intensify, with Genk and Canon Yaoundé currently in the drop zone.

With 26 rounds still to play, Group D promises a dramatic second half of the season as promotion, playoffs, and survival are all very much undecided.
