World Cup of Clubs 2026 (Japan) – Group B Recap
Group B has already become one of the most entertaining groups of the tournament, packed with goals, dramatic finishes, and constant movement in the standings. German giants Bayern Munich currently lead the way, but the race for qualification remains incredibly close.
Bayern Munich Survive the Chaos
Bayern Munich have taken control of the group with six points from three matches, although their campaign has been far from comfortable. The Germans opened with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Gamba Osaka in one of the wildest matches of the tournament so far. They then suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat to Cienciano, a result that completely shook the group standings, before bouncing back with a solid 3-2 win over FC Tokyo.
Bayern’s attack has been outstanding with nine goals scored, but seven goals conceded show they still have major defensive issues to solve.
Gamba Osaka Impressing at Home
Japanese side Gamba Osaka have been one of the biggest surprises of the competition. Despite narrowly losing to Bayern Munich in their opener, they recovered brilliantly with a 2-1 victory over FC Tokyo before drawing 1-1 with Cienciano.
Backed by strong home support, Gamba have shown resilience and attacking quality, putting themselves firmly in contention for a knockout-stage spot.
FC Tokyo Still Alive
FC Tokyo remain very much in the qualification race despite inconsistent performances. The Japanese club earned an important 2-2 draw against Cienciano, but losses to Gamba Osaka and Bayern Munich have left them needing a strong finish to the group stage.
Defensively they have been more stable than some rivals, but they will need more cutting edge in attack if they want to advance.
Cienciano Refusing to Back Down
Peruvian side Cienciano may sit bottom of the table, but they have proven they can compete with anyone in the group. Their stunning 3-1 upset over Bayern Munich was one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far and instantly changed the complexion of Group B.
However, two draws and only one victory have left them trailing slightly in the standings despite remaining unbeaten in their last two matches.
Group B Standings After Matchday 3
- Bayern Munich – 6 pts
- Gamba Osaka – 4 pts
- FC Tokyo – 4 pts
- Cienciano – 2 pts
With only a few points separating all four clubs, Group B is shaping up to have one of the most dramatic finishes of the World Cup of Clubs group stage in Japan. One result could completely change the qualification picture heading into the final round.
