Copa Sudamericana 2026 Round of 16 Recap

The opening Round of 16 clashes in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana delivered drama, dominant performances, and a few shocking turnarounds as clubs battled across two legs for a place in the quarterfinals.

Estudiantes (ARG) vs Unión La Calera (CHI)

Estudiantes de La Plata defeated Unión La Calera 6-2 on aggregate

The Argentine side took firm control in the first leg at the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi with an entertaining 4-2 victory. Estudiantes overwhelmed La Calera with attacking intensity and punished the Chileans repeatedly on the counterattack.

In the return leg in Chile, La Calera needed a miracle comeback but never truly threatened. Estudiantes stayed composed and professional, securing a 2-0 away victory to comfortably advance 6-2 overall.

Estudiantes now look like genuine contenders after scoring six goals across the tie while showing excellent balance between attack and defensive discipline.

Sport Boys (PER) vs Melgar (PER)

Sport Boys defeated FBC Melgar 2-1 on aggregate

The all-Peruvian showdown was one of the tightest ties of the round. The first leg in Callao ended 1-1, leaving everything open heading into the decisive second leg in Arequipa.

Sport Boys produced a disciplined away performance in the return match and stunned Melgar with a crucial 1-0 victory at the Monumental de la UNSA. Their organized defending frustrated Melgar throughout the night, while their decisive goal proved enough to send them through.

Melgar struggled to break down the resilient visitors, and Sport Boys celebrated one of their biggest continental achievements in recent years.

The Strongest (BOL) vs Alianza Lima (PER)

The Strongest lost 3-6 on aggregate to Alianza Lima

This tie completely flipped in the second leg.

The Strongest looked in control after a strong 3-1 first-leg victory in La Paz, using the altitude and home support to dominate large portions of the match. Many expected the Bolivians to comfortably advance.

But Alianza Lima produced one of the performances of the tournament in Peru. Backed by a passionate home crowd at Matute, the Peruvians dismantled The Strongest 5-0 in an unforgettable second leg.

Alianza’s attack was relentless from the opening whistle, while The Strongest completely collapsed defensively under pressure. The dramatic turnaround turned a two-goal deficit into a dominant 6-3 aggregate triumph and instantly made Alianza Lima one of the most dangerous remaining teams in the competition.

Corinthians (BRA) vs FC Ka (BRA)

Corinthians defeated FC Ka 5-3 on aggregate

Corinthians laid the foundation for qualification with a strong 3-1 victory in the first leg at Arena Corinthians. Their attacking quality proved decisive, although FC Ka kept themselves alive with an important away goal.

The second leg at the Maracanã Stadium delivered another entertaining battle. FC Ka pushed aggressively in search of a comeback, but Corinthians matched them throughout a thrilling 2-2 draw.

With a 5-3 aggregate victory, Corinthians advanced thanks to their offensive firepower and ability to control the key moments of both matches. Despite defensive lapses, the Brazilian giants showed enough experience to safely navigate the tie.

Cruzeiro (BRA) vs Caracas FC (VEN)

Cruzeiro defeated Caracas FC 9-3 on aggregate

Cruzeiro produced one of the most dominant performances of the Round of 16.

The Brazilian side struck first in Belo Horizonte with a 4-2 win at Mineirão, overwhelming Caracas with relentless attacking pressure. The Venezuelan club managed to stay competitive offensively, but Cruzeiro’s pace and finishing quality constantly exposed them.

Any hopes of a Caracas comeback disappeared in the second leg. Cruzeiro completely dismantled their opponents with a crushing 5-1 victory away from home, sealing an emphatic 9-3 aggregate triumph.

Cruzeiro now enter the quarterfinals as one of the tournament favorites after scoring nine goals across the two legs.

Bella Vista (URU) vs Atlético Mineiro (BRA)

Bella Vista defeated Atlético Mineiro 4-2 on aggregate

One of the biggest surprises of the Round of 16 came from Uruguay.

Bella Vista shocked Atlético Mineiro in the first leg with a superb 3-1 victory at Estadio José Nasazzi. Their disciplined defending and efficient counterattacking left the Brazilian side with far too much work to do in the return match.

Atlético Mineiro attempted to respond at Arena MRV, but Bella Vista once again frustrated them. The 1-1 draw in Brazil was enough for the Uruguayans to complete a famous 4-2 aggregate upset.

Bella Vista’s organization and composure across both legs eliminated one of the strongest squads remaining in the competition and announced them as the tournament’s dark horse.

Unión Española (CHI) vs Guayaquil City (ECU)

Unión Española defeated Guayaquil City 4-2 on aggregate

This tie was competitive from start to finish, but Unión Española consistently found the crucial goals.

The Chilean club earned a narrow 3-2 victory in the first leg at Santa Laura Stadium in an open and entertaining match where both attacks created plenty of chances.

In Ecuador, Guayaquil City pushed hard to level the aggregate score, but Unión Española delivered a disciplined defensive display and secured a valuable 1-0 away win.

The 4-2 aggregate result sends Unión Española into the quarterfinals after a mature two-legged performance that combined attacking efficiency with strong defensive organization.

The 2026 Copa Sudamericana knockout stage has already produced dramatic comebacks, high-scoring battles, and several surprises, with clubs from Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil still dreaming of continental glory.

Peñarol vs Unión Huaral

The tie delivered one of the most dramatic swings of the Round of 16, with Peñarol barely surviving a furious comeback attempt from Unión Huaral to advance 4-3 on aggregate.

In the first leg at Estadio Campeón del Siglo, Peñarol looked unstoppable. The Uruguayan giants dominated from the opening whistle and cruised to a commanding 4-1 victory. Their attack carved through the Peruvian defense repeatedly, leaving Unión Huaral facing what looked like an impossible task heading into the return leg.

But the second leg in Peru nearly produced an unforgettable turnaround.

At Estadio Julio Lores Colán, Unión Huaral came out aggressive and fearless, feeding off a passionate home crowd. The Peruvians struck twice and shut down Peñarol’s attack completely, earning a 2-0 victory on the night. Suddenly, the aggregate score tightened to 4-3, and Peñarol were pushed into survival mode during the closing stages.

Despite losing the second leg, Peñarol’s dominant performance in Montevideo ultimately proved enough. Unión Huaral’s brave effort fell just short, but they earned respect across the continent for nearly overturning a three-goal deficit.

Peñarol move on to the quarterfinals after a rollercoaster two-legged series, while Unión Huaral exit the tournament with their heads held high after one of the best home performances of the knockout round.
