Copa Sudamericana 2026 Group G Recap

Group G delivered one of the most competitive and dramatic finishes of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana group stage, with all four clubs still mathematically alive heading into the final matchday. In the end, Unión Española emerged as group winners after a thrilling campaign full of late twists, while Melgar secured second place and a spot in the knockout round playoffs.

The Chilean side finished top with 12 points despite conceding 13 goals, showing just how chaotic and attack-minded this group became. Their campaign included crucial victories over Rosario and Melgar, but the defining moment came on Matchday 6 when they edged General Díaz 2-1 away from home to clinch first place. Their explosive 3-2 home win against Rosario earlier in the tournament also proved decisive.

Melgar looked like favorites midway through the group stage after taking four points from their two matches against General Díaz and earning a hard-fought draw in Rosario. The Peruvians finished with 11 points and the group’s best defensive record, conceding only nine goals. However, a damaging home loss to Unión Española on Matchday 5 prevented them from overtaking the Chilean club for the automatic Round of 16 berth.

General Díaz were arguably the surprise package of the group. The Paraguayan side stunned Rosario away from home on opening matchday and later defeated Unión Española in Paraguay to keep qualification hopes alive until the final evening. Ultimately, their inability to close out tight matches — including a costly 2-1 home defeat to Melgar — left them third on seven points.

For Rosario Central, the campaign was one of frustration. The Argentinians failed to win a single match, drawing three and losing three despite scoring 10 goals. Rosario repeatedly showed attacking quality but struggled defensively, conceding 13 times. Their 2-2 draw at Melgar on the final matchday summed up their tournament: entertaining, competitive, but ultimately not enough.

Final Standings:

  1. Unión Española — 12 pts (qualified to Round of 16)
  2. Melgar — 11 pts (qualified to knockout playoffs)
  3. General Díaz — 7 pts
  4. Rosario — 3 pts

Group G perfectly captured the unpredictability of the Sudamericana, where no lead felt safe and qualification battles went down to the final whistle.
